Perfect Delivery Anniversary

Perfect Delivery reached a HUGE milestone this year, reaching 35 years of business. Here in the Monthly Dough Press editors' room, we thought it was a perfect (no pun intended) time to sit down with our CEO Bo Knapp along with one of our longest tenured employees Ron Gaines to bring you a snapshot of some of the early days of our company!

Beginning in the early 90s....

In 1991, our primary owner and CEO Bo Knapp was working in Japan as a CPA. He decided to depart from that job, save up his money, even sold his home to get the initial capital to purchase a contract from Papa John's to open up stores.

"I wanted to open up a business that was more personal as a franchise owner. My goals were for employees to have secure employment under my franchise, have a right amount of time off, work-life balance..."

Our first store was #193 on East North Street in Greenville. Papa John's pizza was still relatively new and getting started was not easy...

Expansion of Perfect Delivery

After a strong push in the 90s, Perfect Delivery looked for expansion. While we were opening up more stores in the upstate, we also ventured into the Ashville market, California, and even bought rights to an international market in Alberta, Canada. Heading to Canada made Perfect Delivery one of the first Papa John's franchises to open an international store. Our Clemson GM Ron Gaines helped build up both the California markets and the Canada market alongside Perfect Delivery as an Operating Partner.

"We bought Asheville from Mark Murphy and then also the rights to Riverside, California. We began with four stores in California ended up doubling sales from every other market we were competing with at the time." - Bo Knapp

Continuing to find success after so many years

"It's our people. We develop and grow from within. So many of our best and most outstanding employees have been with us for so many years. Most of them began as delivery drivers or in-store personnel. And our focus on being one of the best Papa John's franchises we can be. Winning best of the upstate so many years in a row, winning Papa John's franchise of the year three times, and our Simpsonville location being #1 in sales in the nation before we opened up a second location nearby" - Bo Knapp

Turning point of the company

In the our second, sales were not rising as much as we had hoped, and we were struggling. But two different events helped us spring forward as a company. College Football in Clemson and winning "Best of the Upstate" in South Carolina.

In Clemson, the college students fell in love with our pizza especially with our store location just a mile away from the football stadium. The highs of the Clemson location had been a Georgia tech game in the 90s where sales finally reached an all-time high.

The "Best of the Upstate" brought in even more buisness to our locations. The newspaper was sent out to thousands of homes, buisnesses, and apartments and they saw our pizza voted as the best.

*Newspaper clipping of our third straight Upstate award*

"It was so cold in the winter up in Canda, we had to plug our cars up to a block so your oil wouldn't freeze!" -Bo Knapp

Driver out, buckle up and bundle up!

"I had to drive all the way to the border, just to pick up cheese for some stores. The customs was difficult to deal with, but we managed"- Ron Gaines

ALl ABout the Quality

Awesome job to the following stores for leading product quality! This is based off the AI system/camera right above every cut station. When a box is closed. AI technology rewinds the clock a second or two to capture a picture of the product and grade each pizza as a pass or fail. The key components are crust size and roundness (Looking for 1" crust), cheese distribution (no red edges or spots of missing cheese), and topping distribution. It counts the pepperoni so using the right amount every time. It takes everyone on the same page and everyone doing their part to produce high scores.
